Tabari

Arab historian (839-923), jurist, commentator on the Koran. He was born in Tabaristan, Persia (q.v.), but it was in Baghdad (q.v.) that he pursued his scholarly career. His chief work is his History of the Prophets and Kings, which goes from the Creation to 915. It is particularly important for the history of Islam (q.v.), including most aspects of Byzantine-Arab military affairs, e.g., Arab expeditions into Asia Minor (q.v.) and attacks by Arabs on Constantinople (qq.v.). It is a particularly important source for military and diplomatic affairs during the reign of Leo VI (q.v.).
